description
Spectacular anchorage. It happens that an impressive number of large icebergs penetrate through the deep waters of the channel, giving this place a unique atmosphere.
Ritenbenk is a former Danish trading post founded in 1795. At the beginning of the 20th century, it reached its peak with around 130 inhabitants. In 1942, Ritenbenk lost its colony status and in 1959, the village was permanently abandoned.
Today, this place is called Appat. During the salmon season, fishermen from the surrounding villages come here to traditionally smoke freshly caught salmon using bearberry wood (bearberries).
Approach: The landing area is not charted, but the approach from the west is considered safe.
Anchorage: To benefit from the best protection against drifting icebergs, anchor in front of the old village in 10 meters of water, on a sandy and seaweed bottom offering medium to good holding. It is then recommended to tie one or two lines ashore to maintain between 3 and 4 meters of water under the keel at low tide, as the shallow depth then acts as a natural barrier against large ice.

Want to know how the wind score works? Then you should read this explanation.
The wind forecasts come from yr.no (Norwegian Meteorological Institute), and was last updated -86 minutes ago (Saturday 04 July 10:15 AM). The next night score shows you the worst hour between 22:00 and 08:00 the next night. We recommend that you check multiple sources for wind forecasts. windy.com is a good website to show larger wind systems.
The safe wind directions for this harbour has been decided by an algorithm, based on how elevated the land around the harbour is. It's mostly correct, but sometimes the underlying data about elevation levels is not good enough to make correct decisions. It's a great help to other if you can validate or adjust the safe wind directions. You can see the data used by the algorithm to decide the safe wind directions by clicking here.
The visits are retrieved from AIS data. You can click to see all visiting ships to Appat (Ritenbenk), as well as statistics about the ships that visits
