Beau mouillage chargé d'histoire, Herjolfsnæs est un site historique groenlandais majeur. Fondée à la fin du Xe siècle (vers 985) par le chef Herjolf Bardsson, compagnon d'Érik le Rouge, Herjolfsnæs était le port d'entrée des Vikings venus d'Islande et d'Europe. Devenu un lieu de passage incontournable, Herjolfsnæs fut un important centre commercial et d'échanges et joua un rôle clé dans les sagas de la découverte de l'Amérique du Nord.
La disparition de cette colonie demeure mystérieuse. Toutefois, le nom groenlandais actuel de l'ancien établissement nordique, Ikigait, signifie « le lieu détruit par le feu ».
Ce mouillage agréable, qui mérite une visite, offre un bon abri dans la plupart des conditions. Il est toutefois exposé au nord-est. Attention au rocher non signalé sur la carte marine, situé au nord de la zone de mouillage.
