Avec ses 1 500 habitants, Pond Inlet est la plus grande communauté du nord de l’île de Baffin. On y trouve plusieurs supermarchés, un atelier mécanique, de l’eau et du diesel livré au quai, un dispensaire avec sa pharmacie, et même un camion-grue pour sortir un voilier de l’eau.
Approche : De fortes accélérations du vent provoquées par le relief peuvent se produire aussi bien en venant du nord (Navy Board Inlet) qu’en venant par le bras de l’est, en raison du rétrécissement au niveau des îles Beloeil.
Depuis 2022, Pond Inlet possède son propre port, avec un accès au quai dragué à 2,5 m. Néanmoins, ce dernier n’est pas vraiment adapté aux voiliers. Sans échelle, à marée basse, le pont du voilier peut facilement se retrouver 4 m sous le haut du quai, rendant l’accès aux bittes et l’amarrage problématiques. La houle pénètre dans le port, faisant souffrir les pare-battages contre les palplanches d’acier. Le côté sud du quai est le plus protégé.
Par vent d’est, il est préférable d’aller mouiller derrière la digue en attendant l’accalmie. Attention, les courants sont forts et le passage de growlers est fréquent. En présence de glace, il est prudent de laisser un équipier à bord.
Diesel : livraison au quai par camion-citerne. Un des meilleurs endroits du passage du Nord-Ouest pour faire son plein.
Douane : Pond Inlet est un port d’entrée au Canada. Des agents de la CBSA (Canada Border Services Agency) sont présents en saison. En dehors de cette période, ce sont les agents de la RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) qui s’occupent des formalités d’entrée des yachts.
Procédure : Si possible, téléphoner à la CBSA au 1-343-598-6942, deux heures avant l’arrivée.
Dans tous les cas, le capitaine doit se présenter immédiatement au poste de la RCMP avec les passeports et les documents du bateau.
