description
Small floating pontoon with a wood burner sauna and a small museum. The island was occupied by the Germans in WWII and there are many bunkers and fortifications to see. Sadly, it was also a prison camp where Sovjet prisoners of war were used to build the fortifications. There is a war grave on the island too. There are some sheep and lots of seabirds nesting here, hence the south part of the island is a seasonal bird protection area.
The entrance is a bit tricks due to shallow parts but drive slowly with a lookout and you‘ll be fine. The water deepens again at the pontoon.

description
Floating dock and pier. Also nice to anchor. Beautiful area with benches, barbecue and bonfire site. Årøya is located in Lyngen municipality on the west side of Lyngenfjorden, outside Koppangen, approximately 15 km from Lyngseidet. The municipalities of Storfjord, Kåfjord, and Lyngen bought the island in 2005, in collaboration with the Directorate for Nature Management (today the Norwegian Environment Agency). An intermunicipal collaboration was established to use Årøyholmen for public outdoor recreation. Årøyholmen consists of both a landscape protection area and a state-secured recreational area.
