A small additional note regarding the outer dock (the one you get on the starboard side when entering the harbor). It is entirely possible to dock here with a sailboat. You must use a stern anchor and lie with the bow towards the dock. We have done it several times (38 feet, 1.75m depth). It shallows very quickly towards the dock, so it might be that shorter boats with a keel positioned more forward could have problems. There is also no electricity on this dock.

Ramsö is a cosy, sleepy island. In short distance from the harbour you find several small villages with old houses that are kept in good condition as summer houses. The island is generally very well kept and a pleasure to walk around. There are white sandy beaches on each side of the island, so you will always find somewhere protected for wind. There are no shops of cafés, so you need to bring supplies. I was here on a weekday in early June, together with about 8 other boats. I can imagine it being very crowded in July. The harbour is small and shallow. Sailboats can only moor in the inner harbour, either alonside or with a stern anchor and bow to.

Stig Ulfsby says:

description

Ramsö is a small island south of Koster. I had sailed past it several times without noticing it - from Kosterfjorden, it looks like a barren rocky island without any buildings. In 1985, I discovered that a fishing harbor was marked on the west side of the island. There were four of us boys on the trip; we had sailed long in strong winds and high seas and came into a sheltered harbor with some sea huts and a couple of houses. Inside the island, there were green meadows and old, beautiful houses with flowers around. This was an idyll! A fisherman collected the harbor fee. Since then, I have never sailed past but have gone ashore. And the island is today as it was back then. The only difference is that the fishing boats in the harbor have disappeared and there are no permanent residents left, but the houses are used by the fishermen and their descendants as summer homes. Even the fisherman who collected the harbor fee is the same.

The island has the world's finest small beach on the east side. Here there is light, fine-grain sand surrounded by smooth rocks and wild roses. It is south-facing and exposed to the southwest wind. On the west side, a bit south of the harbor, there is also a beach with a fine sandy bottom. It is north-facing and sheltered from the southwest wind, but the islanders don't always clean it of seaweed and other debris that washes ashore.

There is nothing to buy here except for the harbor fee. But it is nice to take a walk on the island. A good hiking destination is the water lily pond on the northwest side of the island. Follow signs to 'neckrosorna'. There is a nice view over the Koster archipelago here. Also, visit the old harbor.

The inner harbor is well protected from all winds. It is a small harbor, and it can be very crowded here in July. Up to 10 boats can be moored alongside each other. There is electricity at the dock, but no water. There is a chemical toilet in the harbor. The outer harbor is more like a natural harbor. It is safe in all winds except from the north, which blows directly in. There is no electricity here.

Want to know how the wind score works? Then you should read this explanation.

The wind forecasts come from yr.no (Norwegian Meteorological Institute), and was last updated 1 hour and 29 minutes ago (Monday 19 May 12:28 AM). The next night score shows you the worst hour between 22:00 and 08:00 the next night. We recommend that you check multiple sources for wind forecasts. windy.com is a good website to show larger wind systems.
