Virgohamna is a historic site.
Since 1633, the Dutch were the first to use this anchorage as a whaling base. Then, in 1897 and 1898, S.A. Andrée built a hangar there as part of his attempt to reach the North Pole by balloon - an attempt that unfortunately proved fatal. On the spot, numerous relics still bear witness to that era.
In 2025, the Governor of Svalbard established landing zones, making any prior visit requests unnecessary.
Anchorage:
Anchor at a depth of 10 to 14 meters, on a substrate of clay and seaweed. Don’t hesitate to re-anchor until you get a satisfactory hold.
The site is a passage area for polar bears.
