Fatutaka is the most unusual anchorage one can imagine: a miter-shaped rock, appearing out of nowhere, set in the middle of the ocean.
It is an anchorage accessible only in calm conditions - which often happens in this intertropical convergence zone (doldrums).
Once or twice a month, fishermen come in outrigger canoes from Anuda Island, located 26 miles northwest, to fish.
Approach and anchorage:
The approach is made at night, to arrive by early morning.
You anchor in 10 to 15 meters over a rocky seabed.
You stay for the day for swimming, then leave before sunset.
Warning:
You must constantly watch the horizon to see if a squall is forming and be ready to set sail if needed.
