Approach and maritime conditions: Portør is a charming little place not far from Kragerø. Approaching from the northeast with Urholmen on the starboard side or from the south with Styrmannsholmen on the starboard side. It looks a bit complicated on the map, but as usual easier than it seems. When passing Styrmannsholmen, you must navigate between two shallows of 1.5 meters. This is unproblematic if you pay a little attention. However, it's easy to pass the bay on the port side right after these shallows. Don't do that. It's very nice to stay there with docks on both sides. But if you continue further north, you will soon arrive at Portør Hamn, also on the port side.
Anchoring: The bay just south of Portør harbor is recommended. Docks on both sides, but in some places a bit shallow for sailboats. It's very nice to anchor in Portør Hamn, but watch out for cables and once inside the bay. Check maps and signage. The old pilot harbor at the south end of the bay is used for commercial traffic so don't be tempted. If the bay is full, choose one of the lovely islets and skerries on the east side. Here you moor alongside or with the anchor out aft. Most places are well sheltered from weather and wind. And some very fine pearls of spots for the lucky ones.
The area: Portør is worth a few days' stay. Beautiful with a great view over the sea and a small local community with old fine buildings from a proud sailing ship era. Portør is also the place where TV-Norge's cooking show Camp Kulinaris is filmed. There is a great restaurant, but unfortunately not open. But don't despair. Nearby, you will find the charming Portør pension with a lovely garden, a good kitchen, and local beer.
