description
Wismar Alter Hafen is located as central as you can get. It is an incredibly pleasant town center with bustling activity during the day until around 6-7 PM. After that, it quiets down and it is peaceful and nice here at night.
But there is a bakery on the quay with good baked goods and good coffee, and there are restaurants of good quality. Wismar is also one of the best-preserved Hanseatic cities as they could not afford to tear down and rebuild, but now they have restored it and it is an authentic and wonderful city to visit.
We were stuck here due to the wind so we had to spend a few extra days, and it is a short distance to the train station, so a couple of days in Berlin never hurt anyone ☺️
There is alongside mooring all the way. You will see red or green plastic signs hanging along the dock, and if you find an available spot, you moor and turn the sign around.
You can find selected berths in Westhafen, but it is Alter Hafen that is the place for boats of some size.
Unfortunately, there is electricity for only a few boats along the quay here, so the facilities are not the best, unfortunately. Water is not available. For that, you have to go to Westhafen. However, in our opinion, Westhafen is not the place to stay for any length of time as it is actually a private marina without charm and with a view of a shipyard.
On the eastern side of the canal, you are facing the bustling square, and the western side is towards a quieter side. But both sides work fine.
You are practically protected from all winds, but there can be some swell here from time to time.

Do you know this harbour? It's a huge help to other sailors if you add a short description or review of the harbour.

Want to know how the wind score works? Then you should read this explanation.
The wind forecasts come from yr.no (Norwegian Meteorological Institute), and was last updated 1 hour and 59 minutes ago (Monday 24 August 01:28 AM). The next night score shows you the worst hour between 22:00 and 08:00 the next night. We recommend that you check multiple sources for wind forecasts. windy.com is a good website to show larger wind systems.
The safe wind directions for this harbour has been decided by an algorithm, based on how elevated the land around the harbour is. It's mostly correct, but sometimes the underlying data about elevation levels is not good enough to make correct decisions. It's a great help to other if you can validate or adjust the safe wind directions. You can see the data used by the algorithm to decide the safe wind directions by clicking here.
