description

Frebergsvik is a well-protected harbor in southern wind directions. In northern wind, it becomes relatively exposed. Mud and clay bottom provide good anchorage, but it becomes shallow quickly. A blue buoy has been set out. The harbor is popular for day-trippers and overnight stays in the usual wind direction in the area. The beach in the cove is little used and very shallow. There is a beach directly west which offers better swimming opportunities from land. The coastal path also goes through Frebergsvik, offering many nice hikes. If you walk to the top of Slettefjell in the west, you are rewarded after a 116-meter climb with a fantastic view!

Below is a bit more about the history of Frebergsvik, prepared by Borre Historielag for, among others, Ut.no:

Frebergsvik, with the possibility for nice hikes, is a former small trading post that was significant due to timber export and the presence of several saltworks. Frebergsvik had a safe harbor that was a hub for trade between domestic and foreign entities, with bartering of goods from the district, especially with Kaupstaden (Kopstad) which was located nearby.

In addition to trade, various craftsmen established themselves in the area, such as a sawmaster, shoemaker, saddler, and tailor. Fishing was also important for the local community, with the use of bottom nets along the shores, especially from Valstad in the northwest and inland. The nets were placed both at Valstad and along Frebergstranda in the west, with the most famous net outside Garnbakken.

Salmon was especially known in the area, and salmon fishing was conducted outside Garnbakken, which was known to be particularly good. The nets also extended towards Veggestranda. Fishing seems to have declined after the 1960s.

West of Frebergsvik, Tveitankastet and Frebergkastet are mentioned, which are probably linked to fishing activities or geographical landmarks in the area.

It is interesting to see how places like Frebergsvik have played an important role in local trade, craftsmanship, and fishing activities, and how these aspects have shaped the local community through history.
