Innseiling og maritime forhold: Enkel innseiling fra øst. Seilbåter bør være oppmerksom på kraftledning. Ved innseiling fra øst er det en kraftledning med friseilingshøyde på 14 meter. Ved innseiling fra vest er det en trang passasje med dybde på 3,5 meter, og bredde estimert til 4-6 meter.

Small floating dock, about 3m depth
Hernar er en av flere bebygde øyer nord for Hellesøy. 6 innbyggere bor fast på øyen, men mange flere har fritidsbolig.
Fortøying: En fortøyer innenfor rutebåtkaien, per Juni 21 er kommunekaien ufendret. Rutebåt anløper den fendrede delen av kaien.

Det oppfordres ikke til å fortøye ved private kaier.

Det bør ikke fortøyes med dregg da det er sjøkabel i sundet.
Området: Lun havn ytterst mot havet, men skjermet for svell/drag og man ligger trygt fortøyet.

Øyene har aner tilbake til vikingtiden. Den gang lå båtene her og ventet på gunstig vind før de la ut.

Til tross for at stedet mangler alle fasiliteter oser øyen av sjarm. Små asfalterte veier med gatenavn og fotgjengerovergang (til tross for bilfri øy) gjør Hernar verdt et besøk.
