Approach and Maritime Conditions: Herøysundet is located at Herøya, in the Flåværleia. Be aware of the shoals on the starboard side and port side just before you enter Herøysundet. The approach is well marked, and it is a good harbor to stay in. Pay attention to winds from the southwest. The depth is 7.7 meters and 5 meters near the shore.
Anchoring: In Herøysundet, you can moor both along the shore and with anchor in the harbor. The depth is 7.7 meters. For further details, refer to the nautical chart.
On the opposite side/north side of Herøya, there is a fixed quay with a simple floating dock that can be used freely. The depth is 2.3 meters, and you can sail in from Flåværleia on both sides of Stegleholmen.
In the sanitary building behind the museum, there is a freshwater tap and a 24-hour open toilet available from Easter to the autumn holidays.
At the parking lot (200 meters walking distance), there are waste containers.
The Area: The island of Herøy has had a central place in the region for over 1,000 years. It was a church site with a banquet hall in the Middle Ages, a court site, a parsonage, and a trading place until 1916. Herøy was the first important harbor north of Stadt and the island is located in Flåværleia - the fairway that has always carried seafarers either straight through to other destinations or to a safe harbor within the fairway.
Today, visitors can explore Herøy gård with the coastal museum and Sunnmørsjekta Anna Olava, representing the old trading place as it appeared in the 1700-1800s. Herøy gård is also a key site along the Coastal Pilgrimage Route and is a beautiful recreational area with walking paths, hiking trails, and pilgrimage paths. One can reach the island both by boat and car.
